The Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development, established by Pope Francis in 2017, promotes integral human development in the light of the Gospel and in the tradition of the Church’s social teachings. It expresses the Holy See’s concern for issues of justice and peace, including those related to migration, health, charitable works, the care of creation, and for suffering people, including the needy, the sick and the excluded. It pays special attention to those who are victims of armed conflicts, natural disasters, and of contemporary forms of slavery. Cardinal Peter K.A. Turkson, President of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace from 2009 to 2016, was appointed by Pope Francis as Prefect of the Dicastery since its creation.
